Selection and insertion sort

โญ beginnerโณ 14 min read๐Ÿ“ Lesson 42 of 256

Two quadratic sorts, the algorithms, and their behavior.

Selection sort โ€” find the smallest remaining, swap it into place:

for (int i = 0; i < arr.length - 1; i++) {
    int min = i;
    for (int j = i + 1; j < arr.length; j++) {
        if (arr[j] < arr[min]) {
            min = j;
        }
    }
    int temp = arr[i];
    arr[i] = arr[min];
    arr[min] = temp;
}

Trace 1: pass 1 finds 1 (index 3), swaps โ†’ 5; pass 2 finds 2, already in place โ†’ 5; pass 3 finds 5 โ†’ 8. After pass k, the first k elements are final.

Insertion sort โ€” grow a sorted prefix; each new element walks left to its slot (like sorting playing cards in your hand):

for (int i = 1; i < arr.length; i++) {
    int key = arr[i];
    int j = i - 1;
    while (j >= 0 && arr[j] > key) {
        arr[j + 1] = arr[j];    // shift right
        j--;
    }
    arr[j + 1] = key;           // drop into the gap
}

Both are O(nยฒ). The exam asks you to trace a couple of passes and count comparisons/swaps โ€” selection sort always does the full inner scan; insertion sort stops early on nearly-sorted data.
