HTTP Anatomy and HttpClient

โญโญ intermediateโณ 18 min read๐Ÿ“ Lesson 126 of 265

Methods, status codes, headers, and how HttpClient carries a request through a handler pipeline.

The request/response contract

A request = method (GET reads, POST creates/submits, PUT replaces, DELETE removes) + URL + headers + optional body. A response = status code + headers

  • optional body. The codes you must internalize:
  • 2xx success (200 OK, 201 Created โ€” response carries the new resource, 204 No Content โ€” success with an empty body),
  • 4xx the CALLER's problem (400 bad input, 401 unauthenticated, 403 unauthorized, 404 missing, 409 conflict, 429 rate-limited),
  • 5xx the SERVER's problem (500, 502, 503).

The rule: 4xx usually means fix your request; 5xx means the other side had a bad day โ€” that's the one you retry.

HttpClient: create once, use everywhere

public sealed class ApiClient
{
    private readonly HttpClient _http;
    public ApiClient(HttpClient http) => _http = http;   // injected

    public async Task<string> GetNameAsync(int id, CancellationToken ct)
    {
        using var resp = await _http.GetAsync($"/names/{id}", ct);
        resp.EnsureSuccessStatusCode();
        return await resp.Content.ReadAsStringAsync(ct);
    }
}

One client per APP lifetime (it pools connections); new-per-call sockets exhaust the connection pool. Inject it (Module 11) or use a typed client.

Handlers: the pipeline

HttpClient sends requests through an HttpMessageHandler chain โ€” each handler transforms or observes the request/response. That's where logging, auth headers, retries, and stubs live:

public sealed class StubHandler : HttpMessageHandler
{
    protected override Task<HttpResponseMessage> SendAsync(
        HttpRequestMessage req, CancellationToken ct)
        => Task.FromResult(new HttpResponseMessage(HttpStatusCode.OK)
        {
            Content = new StringContent("{ \"ok\": true }")
        });
}

var http = new HttpClient(new StubHandler()) { BaseAddress = new Uri("https://api.test") };

Check your understanding

  • Which status says "you sent something wrong"? (4xx โ€” e.g. 400/404/429.)
  • Why not new HttpClient() per call? (Socket exhaustion โ€” pool per app, inject one.)
